Juniper Katz
Juniper Katz is a Research Affiliate at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the Energy Technologies Area, where her work focuses on renewable energy permitting and governance. She is an Assistant Professor of Public Policy at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she directs the Katz Environment & Energy Lab and is affiliated with the Energy Transition Institute.
Dr. Katz's research examines how governance structures shape the pace and equity of renewable energy deployment, with particular attention to trade-offs between public participation and permitting efficiency. Her lab generates actionable insights on natural resources management, environmental protection, energy transitions, and nonprofits in the policy process.
Prior to academia, Dr. Katz spent nearly a decade in the conservation sector, including roles as Executive Director of Montezuma Land Conservancy and Land Protection Fellow at Colorado Open Lands, where she led efforts to protect over 49,000 acres of land and water resources. She also served as a data consultant for the Land Trust Alliance. She holds a Ph.D. in Public Affairs from the University of Colorado Denver.
