US DOE Assistant Secretary David Danielson and DOE Staff Members Visited Site of China Energy Group Energy Assessment Training

July 1, 2014

On June 12th, 2014, a delegation from the U.S. Department of Energy (U.S. DOE) led by Assistant Secretary David Danielson visited the Yanshan Petrochemical Company in the Fangshan District of Beijing, the site where Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's (LBNL's) China Energy Group and others conducted a 4-day energy efficiency assessment in 2013 demonstrating the use of U.S. DOE energy auditing methods and tools. The U.S. DOE delegation also included Rob Sandoli, Director of DOE's Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) International Program, EERE International Senior Advisors Brian Holuj and Winston Chow, Andre de Fountaine, Project Manager of EERE Advanced Manufacturing Office, and Helena Fu, Deputy Director of Clean Energy at DOE China Beijing Office. Lynn Price, Staff Scientist and Leader of the China Energy Group at LBNL, and Hongyou Lu, Senior Research Associate of the China Energy Group, also joined the visit.

The delegation was welcomed by Li Gang, Vice President of the Yanshan Petrochemical Company, Yang Ailing, a representative from Sinopec, and engineers from Yanshan Petrochemical. Professor Jiang Zeyi from the University of Science and Technology Beijing attended the meeting on behalf of the University Alliance for Industrial Energy Efficiency (UAIEE). Lei Fuying, Chief Energy Consultant of General Electric, participated in the meeting as a representative from U.S. companies.

The Yanshan Petrochemical Company Vice President and the Chief Engineer made presentations for Assistant Secretary Danielson on the energy efficiency and emission reduction activities and investments over the last year. Professor Jiang described the U.S.-China collaboration under the UAIEE, especially the collaboration with LBNL. Ms. Lei described GE's participation in the energy assessment workshops conducted by LBNL, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the Institute of Sustainable Communities in China, as supported by U.S. DOE, the UAIEE, and Energy Foundation China. The U.S. DOE delegation then visited the control room of the Operation Support Center, the Eastern Wastewater Reclaim Plant, and the Niukouyu Reservoir.

Assistant Secretary Danielson and his staff asked many questions during the presentation and on-site visit. The active exchange and discussion on energy efficiency and investments in energy-efficient technologies demonstrated the interest to learn and work with each other on energy-saving and emissions reductions activities. The UAIEE representative expressed interest in learning from the experience of the U.S. DOE's Industrial Assessment Centers and adapting their approach to use in the Chinese industrial sector. The representative from GE expressed her company's interests and described the potential benefits to U.S. companies. The site visit was well received by the Assistant Secretary and he commented that he would like to see such collaborative efforts continued and strengthened.
