Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Led U.S.-China Smart Grid Benefits Assessment White Paper Released

November 14, 2016

A joint White Paper on smart grid benefits assessment released at the final workshop of U.S.-China Climate Change Working Group, Smart Grid in Shenzhen was the culmination of a three-year collaboration between multiple U.S. and China research groups. U.S. DOE leads American participation and its counterpart is the National Energy Administration.

The China Energy Group's Chris Marnay attended the Shenzhen workshop on 3-4 Nov. The Working Group is one of five set up in April 2013, and has had the highest profile. In addition to Berkeley Lab on the U.S. side, Southern California Edison, U.C. Irvine, and the Philadelphia Navy Yard contributed analyses of their smart grid demonstrations. On the China side, the Tianjin Eco-city and the Shenzhen Bay Technology and Ecology City were the chosen projects, and the State Grid Corporation of China, Tianjin Electric Power Company, China Southern Grid, and Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau participated. In total, over 30 researchers contributed to the joint effort, leading to the White Paper.

Marnay led the team and chaired six total workshops and over 50 teleconferences. Marnay is best known around the Lab as the inventor of the Distributed Energy Resources Customer Adoption Model (DER-CAM), which he first proposed at the turn of the century. After retiring in 2013, he joined the China Group as an Affiliate and has been active in its work since. He was assisted by Nihan Karali, a post-doc in the International Energy Studies Group, and China Energy Group staff members, Nan Zhou, Aimee Zhu, Angela Liu, Gang He, and Wei Feng. A valuable contribution was also made by Silvia Vitiello, a visiting researcher from the European Commission's Joint Research Center. In its next phase, the Working Group will be focusing on joint standards setting and testing in three areas, renewables and efficiency, electric vehicles, and demand response.
