China's President Xi Jinping Mentioned the LBNL in His Discourse for the 13th Five-Year Plan Development in China

May 2, 2016

China’s President Xi Jinping called for accelerating the establishment of innovation platform led by national laboratories in his discourse on the Explanation of the Suggestions on Developing China’s 13th Five-Year Plan in November, 2015. In the discourse, President Xi pointed out that national laboratories are the indispensable momentum for the development and innovation of science and technology. He especially emphasized the Argonne National Laboratory, the Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, which were all research bases for innovation guided by national missions, built on the principles of inter-disciplinary and collaboration, and received huge support.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory was founded in 1931 as a member of the national laboratory system supported by the U.S. Department of Energy through its Office of Science. In the world of science, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is synonymous with “excellence.” Thirteen Nobel Prizes have been awarded to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory scientists and seventy Lab scientists are members of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory follows the belief of its founder, Ernest Orlando Lawrence, that scientific research is best done through teams of individuals with different fields of expertise, working together. The “Team Science” concept is the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory legacy that continues today. Current annual budget of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is around $820 million.
