China's Largest Construction Company Visits LBNL
China's largest construction company, the China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), visited Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory on June 27, 2014 to explore collaboration opportunities.
Led by CSCEC Deputy Director, Li Yungui, the delegation members were from CSCEC's Technology Research Center that is seeking technologies that could help the company address increasing challenges facing the Chinese building sector. Vladimir Bazjanac, a Staff Scientist at LBNL, gave the delegation a presentation on building information modeling (BIM), one of the areas on which the company has placed an emphasis in recent years and also a focus of their visit to the U.S.
The delegation was also given a presentation on CO2-based biofuels from wastewater chemicals by Harry Beller, Director of Biofuels Pathways at Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) and LBNL Senior Staff Scientist. Director Li expressed the company's particular interest in learning more about this patent-pending innovative technology and possible cooperation because he believes that the building sector in China will shift its focus from current massive construction to environmental remedies in the future, in which wastewater treatment will play a key role. According to Li, the existing building floor area in China is 52 billion square meters and the floor area has grown at a pace of 2.6 billion square meters per year during the past few years, but he expected the pace would slow down to approximately 2 billion square meters in the future. He said wastewater treatment will become a key business for CSCEC and the company has created a department that focuses on this issue.
