February 25, 2014

The Bay Area Council's Economic Institute recently released Ties That Bind, 2014 Edition: The San Francisco Bay Area's Economic Links to Greater China, which includes a detailed summary of LBNL's China Energy Group. The report traces the efforts of the group’s founder, Dr. Mark D. Levine, back to 1987 when he highlighted the need for comprehensive energy consumption data collection in Chinese cities and set on a course to carry out "joint research and technical support projects with companion institutes and government bodies in China." The report notes that the China Energy Group has over 50 on-going projects including China's Top-1000 (now Top-10,000) Energy-Consuming Enterprises program and the U.S.-China Clean Energy Research Center Building Energy Efficiency Consortium (CERC-BEE, URL: https://cercbee.lbl.gov). The report also recognizes the Energy Foundation as a longtime funder and newer supporters from industry in the U.S. and China who have joined the U.S. Department of Energy in funding LBNL's China Energy Group.
