BTUS Releases Website on Healthy, Efficient, New Gas Homes
The Building Technology and Urban Systems (BTUS) Division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s (Berkeley Lab’s) Energy Technologies Area is starting a new research project on Healthy, Efficient, New Gas Homes (HENGH).
The website showcases and supports Berkeley Lab’s project to collect and analyze indoor air quality (IAQ)-related field data and occupant perceptions from new natural gas homes in California. It provides access to information on the project and how homeowners can participate. It also links qualifying homeowners to the online occupant survey.
The project seeks to answer two questions:
- How are homes built to the Title 24 2008 standards performing with respect to ventilation-related criteria?
- How can adequate ventilation and good IAQ be provided while reducing infiltration and its related energy use?
It aims to remove barriers to energy efficiency and help protect the health, safety, and comfort of new homes in California. The project’s three major activities are: an occupant survey, field monitoring of new homes, and simulation and analysis. Based on field data and simulations, researchers will recommend future versions of Title 24 to enable zero-net energy homes to meet California’s 2020 goal. The project is funded by the California Energy Commission.
Seven research groups within BTUS work closely with industry to develop building technologies that increase energy efficiency and improve the comfort, health, and safety of building occupants. Learn more about what BTUS does, and how to work with them, by clicking the link below.
