Commercial Buildings

Commercial building systems research explores different ways to integrate research results in windows, lighting, and simulations with the goal of developing coherent and innovative building construction and design techniques.

Our research focuses on developing advanced, computer-based building design tools that assist the architect or engineer in decision-making from early, schematic design through building construction, commissioning, and operation.

In the spirit of the healthy or green building, our researchers also seek ways to integrate a variety of isolated building technologies into complete systems that allow for compounded energy savings while increasing occupant comfort.

From software tools such as EnergyIQ (which enables users to benchmark a building's energy use at the whole-building and system level) to FLEXLAB® (a configurable facility where whole-system performance can be tested before its incorporation into a new building's design), the Energy Technologies Area provides information and tools that stakeholders need to make confident choices about energy-efficient building technologies.
