Bio

Ranjit Deshmukh is an Assistant Professor in the Environmental Studies department at University of California Santa Barbara. He was an ITRI-Rosenfeld postdoctoral fellow in the Energy Technologies Area at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Ranjit’s research efforts largely focus on addressing the clean energy and energy access challenges in developing regions. His research addresses policies and technical solutions needed to integrate large amounts of wind and solar in electric grids of developing regions, especially India and Africa. He is also working on energy access challenges, specifically on increasing reliability and access through energy efficient appliances and renewable energy-based mini-grids and pico lighting systems. Prior to Berkeley Lab, Ranjit was with the Prayas Energy Group, an energy policy thinktank in India, and before that, at the Schatz Energy Research Center at Humboldt State University. He loves to backpack, bike and be on the water. Ranjit holds a PhD from the Energy and Resources Group at the University of California at Berkeley, master’s degrees from Humboldt State University and University of Texas at Austin, and a mechanical engineering bachelor’s degree from College of Engineering Pune, India.
