Alastair is an engineering project manager with 13 years of technical and project management experience in consultancy and research environments. He received a BSc in Geology from Liverpool University and an MSc in Technology and Innovation Studies (Industrial Policy and Environmental Technology) from the University of Sussex’s Science Policy Research Unit. His UK experience was in leading multi-disciplinary teams on concept, detailed design and engineering of community and district-wide mechanical energy systems – particularly those utilising cogeneration, heat and cooling networks and small-scale renewable generation – and commercial building energy efficiency research and demonstration projects. His clients included environmental organisations, local authorities, Universities, Federal agencies and commercial developers. Since joining LBNL, Alastair’s projects have mainly comprised technology field demonstration and deployment in commercial buildings, including energy performance measurement and verification of a large central cooling plant, and several projects in the lighting and advanced lighting controls area. He is Program Manager for all LBNL activities under the GSA Proving Ground program. Alastair is interested in the role of energy systems in urban planning, particularly with respect to provision of energy flexibility and future proofing, and what that means for the role of distributed energy.
