Atomic Force Microscopy - Applications to Energy & Environmental Technologies
Seminar Abstract
Miquel Salmeron is a Senior Scientist in the Materials Science Division and has been doing research in scanning probe microscopy since shortly after the announcement of the first STM. He has applied this work to a number of areas within materials science, including surface chemistry (chemisorption, catalysis) and more recently to basic studies of friction and lubrication. His talk will include description of a recently-invented technique for imaging liquids. This has applications in nanometer scale studies of wetting, ionic mobility and exchange, corrosion, environmental chemistry (acid rain, soil and mineral modification by toxic solutions, etc.) He is interested in finding applications outside pure materials science for some of the techniques he has developed.
