A major focus of the report’s chapter on industrial energy efficiency is ISO 50001 - the internationally developed framework for managing energy as a business practice. Research led by Peter Therkelsen and Berkeley Lab's Industrial Applications Team provided quantitative evidence of the benefits being realized by the industrial sector through uptake of ISO 50001 energy management systems.

“Working with industrial partners, we have clearly demonstrated the significant cost and energy savings resulting from managing energy with business practices based on ISO 50001. We are excited to be working with the IEA to share these results, highlighting the economic and societal impact global uptake of ISO 50001 can have." Therkelsen said.

Highlights of the impact ISO 50001 energy management systems report include:

  • The use of ISO 50001 energy management systems is growing, rising from 459 to 11,985 certification between 2011 and 2015
  • Verified cost savings rates improved from 3.0% to 12.2% following ISO 50001 implementation
  • Implementation of energy management systems is a key element of industrial energy efficiency policies in many countries

In addition to a focus on energy management systems, the report analyzes a variety of topics, including:

  • Energy efficiency in the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors
  • Investment
  • Finance
  • Market mechanisms
