Electricity Markets and Policy Group

The Electricity Markets and Policy Group conducts technical, economic, and policy analysis of energy topics centered on the U.S. electricity sector. Research is organized into six research areas:

  • Demand Response & Smart Grid research focuses on design, implementation, evaluation, and cost benefit analysis; policy analysis and technical assistance; and integrating variable renewable generation.
  • Electricity Reliability research explores electricity reliability technology R&D; electricity reliability metrics and trends; the economic value of reliability for electricity consumers; and blackout investigations.
  • Energy Efficiency research involves utility customer-funded programs, financing energy efficiency, energy saving performance contracting, SEE Action Network technical and policy support, and determining program impacts (EM&V).
  • Regional Electric System Planning research offers interconnection-wide transmission planning support.
  • Renewable Energy research concentrates on renewable energy policy analysis and assistance; cost, benefit, and market analysis; grid operations and infrastructure impacts; and public acceptance and deployment barriers.
  • Transmission research focuses on transmission planning support, transmission usage and congestion, bulk power reliability data and trends, and reliability event assessment.
